New Years Resolution Classes for Winter 2021 at Pacific Grove Adult School

The New Year brings a renewed interest in our resolutions to learn and grow in our skills and life learning. Pacific Grove Adult School offers a wonderful assortment of opportunity to immerse yourself in a variety of subjects and learning experiences. The class sizes are small and the teachers are dedicated to your learning experience. I am offering Portfolio Development and Advanced Lightroom Q&A. Portfolio Development is an opportunity to organize that project that has been languishing for awhile and get started on that book, slideshow or exhibit that you have been promising yourself you would get to someday. Well, that day is here!! Advanced Lightroom Q&A is for the person who has questions about Lightroom Classic and wants to be part of a community that can assist in answering some of those questions about your workflow, importing strategies and the mystery of editing.

My colleagues are offering courses in Creating Videos for Zoom, Learn to Take Dramatic Photos (Basic Photo Class), iPhone and iPad Bootcamp, Mac OS 10 and Big Sur, iWatch and Your Health, and Mac Lab.

So, do yourself a favor and take those New Year’s Resolution over to https://pgadulted.pgusd.org and register online for a few classes to enrich your life experience in 2021.

WINTER DISTANCE LEARNING CLASSES 2021 SURVEY

I hope that this find you all well and thriving in this new norm we find ourselves in.

I have not written in a couple of months. I could blame the many distractions in our culture but suffice it to say, it has been difficult to find words. Teaching helps me focus my attention on the needs of others and it is constructive. I find it places my attention on the importance of the human spirit and the value of imagination and creativity. The gift of creating something meaningful or personal is it’s own reward.

Classes for the winter session at Pacific Grove Adult School are due next week very soon. We now know that we will continue with distance teaching on Zoom. I believe we have permission to have classes meet outdoors. I would like to incorporate that idea into camera classes if the registered students are comfortable with it. We comply with all of the Covid-19 Guidelines as prescribed by the school and the health department.

I need your help deciding what classes to offer this winter. Please look at the list below and send me your unofficial vote or comments. If a class is not listed, suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am not going to share any comments or suggestions. I am looking for feedback and what would best serve our community in the coming summer months.

Artists in Residence - Covid Style

I have been pretty quiet for awhile. The onset of the pandemic and the learning curve that came with it has been all consuming. Lives upended en masse. A new vocabulary and lifestyle changes that shocked all of us to the core. Restless in spirit but no where to go but inward.

I found myself trying to put words to all of these feelings but I was at a loss. So, I borrow a phrase from well known artists and photographers….Artist in Residence. I have always wondered, with some envy, what it would be like to be chosen to live as as Artist in Residence. A gift of time with no distractions but the task of creating. Dream, Envision, Wander.

Suddenly, I realize, I am an Artist in my Residence. I certainly have my responsibilities but I also have the luxury of some extra time. What to do with the time? I decided to listen instead of act. I have been listening to others talk about their work. I have been listening to others teach their techniques. I have been listening to myself. I made a conscious decision to just let it all wash through me rather than react or act. This new norm is quite different then the life I was accustomed to.

The Art of Listening is quite powerful. The act of reflecting on what I was listening to rather than reacting to it is liberating. I am finding my meuse coming back a little at a time. I am remembering things I loved to do as a child. Those memories were buried in the nowness of a busy world. It is quite wonderful.

I will share one memory with you. It was the summer after my 14th birthday and we lived in Garapata Canyon. Housing was a bit rustic but we were young and adventurous. My 4 siblings and I had a children’s paradise to explore far and wide. Garapata Creek at the time meandered through the canyon, in and out of micro climates. We would spend our days exploring, swimming in the deepest part of the creek, and picking water cress for lunchtime sandwiches.

One day we got the bright idea to round up the donkey who lived with us in the canyon. We packed a lunch and loaded the younger ones on the donkey with our provisions. We headed out up the canyon into the wilder, as yet unknown territory we had our sites set on. We walked for what seemed like hours and it was getting pretty hot. We came across wonders. An old abandoned cabin with a decaying upright piano in it. Wild bees we had to run from after one of the kids decided a stick was the best way to examine the nest.

We had our lunch in a clearing full of ferns and flowers. You could imagine the fairies and wood nymphs hiding from us in this magical place. We pressed on after our meal. Soon after we heard a sort of low, muffling sound and out of the woods emerged a wild boar. Well, we had been warned by our parents not to fool with them. The donkey took off and left us standing there. . You never saw a group of children climb up a tree faster then we did in that moment. The younger ones were crying and my brother and I were trying not to panic. We had to wait until the beast moved on and lost interest in us. It was almost dark. We got down from the tree and set a record getting back home. We never spoke of it to our parents or ourselves again. So, I have my Beauty and the Beast story imbedded in my memories waiting to be reflected upon.

So, despite current challenges, I find the opportunity to reflect and listen a gift that feeds something within that has real value. Time. What a gift.

Summer School Distance Learning Survey

Pacific Grove Adult School will have a summer program beginning on June 22-Sep 12th. We will be using Distance Learning or DL for the classes. The virtual classes are taught on Zoom in my case. We had the past few months of staying home to practice with existing classes and students. Zoom is easy to use and allows us to share your screen if we need to sort a student out. It has been my experience as well as that of my colleagues that 2 hours is about the limit for these DL classes. Content has to be modified and changed to adapt to this learning format.

I need your help deciding what classes to offer this summer. Please look at the list below and send me your unofficial vote or comments. If a class is not listed, suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am not going to share any comments or suggestions. I am looking for feedback and what would best serve our community in the coming summer months.

This is not a class to jumpstart you in either program. It is intended for photographers to see what each program can bring to their photo tool kit.

1. We will ask you to submit a photo(s) with question(s) to be reviewed in the class.

2. We would ask that your submission be put in a Dropbox provided the Thursday before the class with to the question emailed in order to provide us with time to prepare.

3. The class will be held virtually on Zoom. It is not necessary for you to have a Zoom account. But you do need to download the application before class.

4. The first class will be an orientation about how to use Zoom, an overview of the course and time for Q&A.

5. This class is limited to 8 in order to provide enough time for Q&A.

6. It is offered at no charge.
