Lightroom Classic Refresher Course - May/June 2022 Hybrid (Copy)

How are you doing with the upgrades Adobe has added in the past couple of months? The biggest ones have been in the Develop Module with the addition of masking tools, sky replacement etc. . It has made Lightroom Classic a much more robust program but also created a learning curve for many.

I am offering an evening Lightroom Classic Refresher course on Tuesday from 6-8:30 beginning on May 3rd. The class will be hybrid. You can bring your laptop and attend in person OR attend on Zoom.

We will start with a review of the Import process and try to trouble shoot any issues you might be having with how your library is set up. I will not be addressing catalog issues in this class unless they are very easy.

We will then review the Deveop Module and the new masking tools introduced in the new version of Lightroom Classic 11. You may have upgraded to Lightroom 11.2 or 11.3 for the bug fixes. The assumption is that you have upgraded to the Lightroom Classic 11. If you have decided to stay with the older version of Lightroom Classic 10.4 or earlier, you can still benefit from this refresher course.

The class will meet May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24, May 31, June 7, 2022 from 6-8:30. Fee for 6 classes is $299. Class size is limited to 6 either on location in the studio or on Zoom. (5 on location is max)

I have 2 CLASSES IN THE WINTER QUATER AT PG ADULT SCHOOL. BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN IN PERSON, MASK REQUIRED CLASS IN THE MAC LAB ON CAMPUS AT 1025 LIGHTHOUSE IN PACIFIC GROVE. All precautions to create a safe environment have been taken. Check in required of each person entering and leaving campus. We have a mask mandate and each classroom is sanitized after each class. Mask mandate is in place and we have social distanced the computers to make sure everyone has a safe place to learn. If it becomes necessary, we will move to a Zoom format to complete the course. We will be adjusting to requirements as they occur.

Photography Walking Tour is outdoors in fresh air and masks will be required in certain situations. See details below for each class.

Musings About Teaching Photography in the Pandemic Era

Teaching in the pandemic era has put an interesting twist on methods and modalities. Classes became virtual instead of in person. Zoom became the “lens” through which we gathered together. Limitations and obstacles became the learning curve. Cameras in real time became an image on a screen with expanded definitions of basic tools. Prints in real time bacame a digital file on a screen for critique or comment. Portfolio projects seemed to slow down or go into stasis.

I gradually began to feel like a voyeur. Engagement with students on a screen resembled a weird version of the movie “Matrix”. I felt real, but like the people who appeared on my screen, I too was a virtual image of myself on a screen. A talking head. We were in a science fiction version of the world we once knew. It quickly became the normal way of seeing the world. We were part of the screen now - computer screen, smart phone screen, iPad screen, TV screen and so forth.

I began to realize slowly, over time that the tactile experience of holding and touching a camera or print was an integral part of learning photography (and many other art forms). Every effort was made to convert our class material to Zoom. The results were interesting and kept us searching for new and different ways to deliver course content through technical methods. Each class required new skills and study time. One method would dissolve into another method as new material and skills came to light.

I began to notice a change in my students over time. A general malaise settled in during the time in a zoom class. Energy levels were not the same as an in person class. Attention spans were limited. 3 hours classes were best at 2 hours; retention of new material slipped. There were some positives. Students who had difficulty traveling due to distance or medical needs were able to attend classes not available to them before the pandemic shut us down. Students who worked could now manage to attend from any location. The potential exists to expand this platform into a hybrid model that is more inclusive than just those who can travel locally. Zoom made attending a class more democratic.

Teachers who have been in a 3D model classroom with access to tools and support were quite suddenly thrown into a virtual world. We were asked to teach a digital model without any idea of how to do that. Training was not available in the beginning. It took months to begin thinking in new ways. Instead of trying to put a 3D model on a 2D screen skills had to be developed. Creativity and the ability to adapt became a necessary tool. Teachers as well as students had to adapt quickly.

The pandemic has put a spotlight on our schools, teachers, methods, modalities and content and how we learn. I love to teach. I am one of many teachers who find ourselves at a crossroads. Reflecting on how we got here. Where is this going? How do we move forward from this place we find ourselves in? Can I keep up and adapt as things constantly change in this new pandemic era. Is it right to ask a teacher to sacrifice family time with no compensation to learn these new skills? What can we bring forward into this new paradigm to enhance the learning and teaching experience? Please let me know what you would be interested in attending. Fall Classes begin on Sep 20, 2021 and run through Dec 18, 2021. Fees for classes average $90. There may be some outside costs for a book, software or apps depending on the course. Please email me and choose your favorite by number. 1. Lightroom Classic - a 10 week course on the Import Module and Development Module. Class meets once a week on either Tuesday or Thursday evening 6:00PM to 8:30 PM in the MacLab at Pacific Grove Adult School. There may be hybrid options.

2. Photography in the Evening - 10 week course - Weekly discussion and critique on images submitted by each student. Focus will be on student needs as well as basic photographic principles and technique. Lightroom and Photoshop will be used for demonstration. Class would meet on Tuesday or Thursday evening from 6PM to 8:30 in the MacLab. Hybrid option might be available.

3. Fall Field Trips in Monterey County. Class would meet in various locations each week with a focus on camera skills. Locations in Monterey County. Examples: Pacific Grove Victorians, Monterey Adobes, Memory Gardens, Moss Landing, Point Lobos, Big Sur, San Juan Bautista. Time and day of week TBD. Each field trip will have a followup Zoom class to critique images.

4. iPhoneograpy Ideas and Experiments - 10 week course - Brush up on your iPhone camera skills. Explore some of the apps available to the iPhone photographer and have some constructive critique, Q&A sessions. Optional field trips on meeting dates TBD. This class would meet for 2 hours weekly on Monday afternoon 1-3 PM. Options for hybrid may be available.

5. Photoshop for Lightroom Users: 10 week course - Learn to jump from Lightroom to Photoshop to learn essential techniques and edits you can’t do in Lightroom. You must have basic Lightroom skills. This class would meet wither Tuesday or Thursday evening 6-8:30 PM. Hybrid options might be available.

New Years Resolution Classes for Winter 2021 at Pacific Grove Adult School

The New Year brings a renewed interest in our resolutions to learn and grow in our skills and life learning. Pacific Grove Adult School offers a wonderful assortment of opportunity to immerse yourself in a variety of subjects and learning experiences. The class sizes are small and the teachers are dedicated to your learning experience. I am offering Portfolio Development and Advanced Lightroom Q&A. Portfolio Development is an opportunity to organize that project that has been languishing for awhile and get started on that book, slideshow or exhibit that you have been promising yourself you would get to someday. Advanced Lightroom Q&A is for the person who has questions about Lightroom Classic and wants to be part of a community that can assist in answering some of those questions about your workflow, importing strategies and the mystery of editing.

WINTER DISTANCE LEARNING CLASSES 2021 SURVEY

I hope that this find you all well and thriving in this new norm we find ourselves in.

I have not written in a couple of months. I could blame the many distractions in our culture but suffice it to say, it has been difficult to find words. Teaching helps me focus my attention on the needs of others and it is constructive. I find it places my attention on the importance of the human spirit and the value of imagination and creativity. The gift of creating something meaningful or personal is it’s own reward.

Classes for the winter session at Pacific Grove Adult School are due next week very soon. We now know that we will continue with distance teaching on Zoom. I believe we have permission to have classes meet outdoors. I would like to incorporate that idea into camera classes if the registered students are comfortable with it. We comply with all of the Covid-19 Guidelines as prescribed by the school and the health department.

I need your help deciding what classes to offer this winter. Please look at the list below and send me your unofficial vote or comments. If a class is not listed, suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am not going to share any comments or suggestions. I am looking for feedback and what would best serve our community in the coming summer months.

Photographic Field Trips with assignment and followup critiques online. This hybrid style class would involve meeting at different locations with an assignment in mind and then a followup online critique for each student in a group Zoom class. It would have to be approved by administration and follow all social distancing and Covid-19 guidelines. This is very possible as photographers spread out when in a group after the initial instruction.
